About Coach Shawn Clark
A beloved coach, devoted husband, and caring father whose impact on the coaching community will never be forgotten.

More Than a Coach
A native of Charleston, West Virginia, Shawn Clark excelled in both football and basketball at George Washington High School, where he helped lead his basketball team to the 1993 State Championship. He went on to become a two-time All-American offensive lineman at Appalachian State, earning three all-conference selections during his time in Boone.
Shawn earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from App State in 1998 and a master's degree in education from Louisville in 2003. His coaching career spanned Eastern Kentucky, Purdue, Kent State, and back to Appalachian State, where he served as head coach from 2019 to 2024, compiling a 40–24 record including a 10-win season in 2021. In January 2025, he joined UCF as offensive line coach under Scott Frost.
As Scott Frost said, “He was the glue guy for our staff.” Shawn's ability to connect with people, to care genuinely, and to lead with integrity made him irreplaceable. He is survived by his wife Jonelle and their two children, Giana and Braxton.
“Shawn was so much more than a coach. He was a remarkable man, husband, and father who cared deeply about his players and staff. The reaction of our players and coaches to the news is a testament to Shawn's character and the impact he had on every life that he touched.”
— Scott Frost, UCF Head Coach
