About Coach Shawn Clark

A beloved coach, devoted husband, and caring father whose impact on the coaching community will never be forgotten.

Coach Shawn Clark

More Than a Coach

Shawn Curtis Clark was born on August 16, 1975, in Charleston, WV to Roy Jr. and Joyce Clark. A devoted husband, loving father, son, brother, uncle, friend and coach who left a lasting mark on the hearts of all who knew him.

Shawn grew up in the hills of West Virginia, where he learned the values that would define his life — loyalty, hard work, and a deep commitment to the people he cared about. A graduate of George Washington High School in 1993, he was a standout athlete in football, baseball and basketball, helping lead his basketball team to the 1993 State Championship. Though basketball came naturally, Clark's heart was always on the football field. After a senior-year knee injury slowed recruiting interest, he went to Fork Union Military Academy to continue his athletic and academic journey.

On July 5, 2008, Shawn wed his best friend and soulmate, Jonelle Csora. United by unwavering love and friendship, they later welcomed two precious children, Giana and Braxton, who completed their family. Being a husband and father was not just a role he played — it was the heart of who he was.

“You can't put a price tag on a good time.”

— Coach Shawn Clark

A Mountaineer Through and Through

As a player, Clark (#61) was a two-time All-American and three-time all-conference selection on the offensive line at Appalachian State, where the Mountaineers posted a 45–16 record during his career. He graduated from App State with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 1998 and earned a master's in education from Louisville in 2003.

Coaching Career

Clark built his coaching résumé with roles at Louisville, Eastern Kentucky, Purdue, Kent State, and Appalachian State, where he guided multiple All-Americans and NFL draft picks.

A veteran coach with more than two decades of experience, he compiled a 40–24 record across five seasons as head coach at App State. His tenure was highlighted by a 10-win season in 2021, three bowl victories, multiple Sun Belt East Division titles, and offensive line units ranked among the best in the country.

In 2022, Clark recorded App State's first victory against an AP top 10 opponent since 2007, taking down No. 6 Texas A&M, 17–14. His 2024 team led the Sun Belt in passing offense, averaging 273 yards through the air each game to rank 19th nationally.

In December 2024, Coach Clark joined UCF, bringing the same dedication and passion that defined his career at every stop.

A Life Lived with Purpose

More than championships and wins, Shawn was defined by the relationships he built. He cared deeply for his players, his staff, and every young life entrusted to his guidance. His colleagues and players often spoke not just of his football acumen, but of his integrity, his humility, and the genuine warmth with which he treated others — qualities that made him not only a coach, but a mentor and a friend.

He loved spending time at the beach and the lake on his boat, where he found peace, relaxation, and moments of reflection. He loved hosting cookouts and gatherings with family and friends — filling every moment with laughter, warmth, and connection.

Shawn's life was one lived with purpose, passion, and a generosity of spirit that will not be forgotten. His legacy lives on — in his family, in his friends, and in the countless players and colleagues who carry forward the lessons he taught by example: to lead with heart, to work with integrity, and to love deeply.
